Our Story

Welcome to Quimby on 23rd.

Our community's brand identity channels the spirit and legacy of America’s first female certified aviator, Harriet Quimby, and the excitement of 23rd Street's Restaurant Row in our National Landing neighborhood, now taking off. As Quimby on 23rd, we're celebrating the velocity of a neighborhood gliding to new heights and paying homage to our incredible location mere moments from one of the nation's most iconic airports.

Who was Harriet Quimby?

Harriet Quimby passed her pilot's license test on August 1st, 1911, making her the first licensed female pilot in the United States. Within a year, she became the first woman to fly across the English Channel. She designed her own plumb-colored, satin flying suit that was rumored to make her green eyes sparkle. Both the plumb and green colors are reflected in Quimby on 23rd's branding.

Quintessential Quimby: Life at Our Community

Our community story extends beyond words on a page - it flows seamlessly into Quimby on 23rd's physical experience.

Inside, our renovated communal spaces are a nod and a wink to our fearless Harriet. Our lobby includes a replica of the Integrale Chauvière propeller which was the first aerodynamically advanced propeller manufactured in Europe, and the propeller used on Harriet Quimby’s Blériot XI monoplane. This two-bladed fixed-pitch propeller had a diameter of 6 feet, 8 inches. Quimby flew across the fog-shrouded English Channel in her monoplane in 1 hour and 9 minutes, the first woman aviator to ever make this daring flight. Her only instruments were a hand-held compass and a watch.

Outside, the vibrant streetscapes of National Landing have also taken off, with incredible new hot spots around town like the newly re-opened Water Park and Met Park, plus Alamo Cinema & DraftHouse, Long Bridge Park Aquatics & Fitness Center, and more. And perhaps most importantly, Quimby on 23rd pays homage to our pilot namesake with immediate access to high-speed travel including Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA), the Metro, and VRE station - all mere minutes from home.
